During his visit, he met with flood-affected residents and disaster response teams to assess ongoing relief efforts.
Flood Situation in Punjab
Punjab is experiencing one of its worst floods since 1988, triggered by swollen rivers Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and within Punjab itself. The disaster has impacted over 3.87 lakh people across 15 districts, damaging crops on 1.84 lakh hectares and affecting 2,064 villages.
PM Modi’s Visit Highlights
Aerial Survey and On-Ground Assessment: PM Modi surveyed flood-affected areas from the air before holding an official meeting in Gurdaspur with state officials and elected representatives.
Meetings with Relief Personnel: He interacted with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Aapda Mitra teams engaged in rescue and relief operations.
Financial Assistance Announcement: The PM announced ₹1,600 crore in additional flood relief for Punjab, supplementing the ₹12,000 crore already allocated. This includes advance release of the second instalment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.
Ex-Gratia Payments: ₹2 lakh each for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for seriously injured flood victims were declared.
Support for Orphaned Children: Assistance under PM CARES for Children was pledged for those orphaned by the floods.
Multi-Dimensional Recovery Plan: The PM emphasized rebuilding efforts under the PM Awas Yojana, restoration of highways, school reconstruction with support under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, and livestock relief kits distribution.
Agricultural Support: Special focus on aiding farmers without power connections and refurbishing silted borewells under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.
Water Conservation Initiatives: Large-scale construction and repair of water harvesting structures under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari to ensure long-term water security.
Response and Impact
The floods have led to 51 deaths and extensive crop and property damages estimated at ₹13,000 crore. More than 23,000 people have been safely evacuated. PM Modi’s visit reassures the Centre’s support for Punjab’s recovery and resilience during this critical time.
